Interesting Chemical Color Information

Ammonia is a naturally occurring gas. When bubbled into water Ammonium Hydroxide is created. This is an ingredient in permanent Hair Color. After about 1 hour at room temperature, ammonia stops ‘working’ in a color formula. After 20 minutes have passed. ammonia begins to dissipate in the hair.

MEA is a laboratory-created liquid. I5 times the amount of MEA is required to achieve a comparative color action than ammonia which is now 2 1/2 to 5 percent level in a permanent color shade.

Creating MEA: In the laboratory, a reaction between ammonia and ethylene oxide is formed to create Mono Ethanol Amine.
