I attended a controlled laboratory experiment , testing the performance of permanent hair color. The test was a ‘half head’ test using one model for each evaluation. The backs of the models’ heads were used, parted vertically parted in the center, crown to nape.
Model One: A High Lift Blonde Shade was used, mixed with 40 volume developer and processed for one hour at room temperature.
Model Two: A brunette model with 50 percent gray hair. A level 4 shade of permanent hair color was mixed with 20 volume developer and processed for 45 minutes at room temperature.
On the right side of each model’s head, color was applied, using a brush— taking 1/4 inch sections. That same color formula was applied to the left side of the model’s head, taking 1/8 inch section.
The timer was set:
Results: On the blonde model, lift on the left side of the head was significantly higher.
On the brunette model, the left side of the hair displayed a higher brunette result with very thorough, complete, gray coverage. The takeaway: Meticulous, finely sectioned application of a color formula is partly responsible for the quality of the color result. So, in general: The finer the section, the better the result! B.
