MAKE MORE MONEY

I've learned that most salon color clients do not respond well if we try to explain why

they should avoid "going gray". This decision has become a bit political, a statement

against ageism, and, of course..... financial. Offering to help them 'transition to silver' seems to work well, helps them feel understood and heard, and keeps them in your chair.

One great way to support this color change is to what I call "OMIT THE EDGES". I do

this by omitting color application ( 1 1/2 inches in) to the hair right at the edge of the forehead, the entire

face frame, the hair behind the ears, and the nape. I apply a conditioner to the base and through the hair lengths to this area which will not receive the color retouch. Next, I formulate the new color by using a shade a BIT lighter than that I have been using in

the past. I apply this to ALL THE REGROWTH not located around the hair framing

the "edges" of the hair line. In essence, we have created a retouch "cap" covering

the gray root at the interior area of the hair. The result is that we are permitting the

gray to come through all throughout the exterior of the hair, while softly changing our

approach to color throughout the interior area.

This subtle yet noticeable change creates a softer, less "harsh" all over gray root coming out of the head., and helps the client adjust to becomiing more "silver'. Of course, you can opt

to create very pale blonde highlights at this omitted face frame, but that choic is up to

you and to your client. ... PS. Two things remain in the future: You can repeat this same

approach four to six weeks from now.. as more silver hair apppears at the edges, . Or,

believe it or not, after several months, your client MIGHT say. "I don't like seeing this gray.

Let's go back to what we did previously.

The takeaway: After allowing the client time to talk about her decision to stop coloring her hair, I've learned not to argue.. but to kindly recommend help as she transitions to silver.

This choice is discussed with patience.. and is hers to make. As I've shared before: I

recommend that you purchase a silver wig... pop it onto your client's head.. and let her

see for. herself what the future might look like.
