Science reveals that individuals whose hair is naturally red, may feel physical
pain more intensely, and that a larger dose of sedative may be necessary when they
are being sedated for a medical procedure.
Why? It is the presence of the MC1R, (melanocortin 1 receptor) gene variant located
in the melanocytes. These variants seem to influence secretions related to pain tolerance.
Who would have thought that a gene variant associated with hair color would indicate
other differences. Perhaps science will discover how hair color gene variants
present in natural brunette or blonde hair affect those individuals born with these
distinct colors of hair. B
