SULFATES - SURFACTANTS

Effective cleansing of scalp and skin does not require lather.. however, lather assists in lifting cellular debris and pollutants away from the skin.. and in ease of rinsing away the cleanser.
SURFACTANTS are an important part of a cleanser.. and a part of many hair color products. Surfactants can be natural or synthetic. They reduce the surface tension of water and help to make water "wetter"..... SURFACTANTS are NOT SULFATES.
SULFATES are a type of SURFACTANT. Again, SULFATES make up only a small group of SURFACTANTS.... As advanced hair color professionals, it's a good idea to look at the list of ingredients in products. particularly when evaluating shampoos.
Recently, a huge and successful "advance" in shampoo includes that of its being labeled "SULFATE FREE"...... Science tells us that the chief issue attached to sulfates is that they can be IRRITATINGto the skin and eyes, and carry a ph that might possibly decrease longevity of hair color. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, the FDA permits SULFATES to be a food ingredient!! Of course i approve of and often use sulfate-free shampoos, but a part of this
is attached to MARKETING....
Look at the ingredient listing on your shampoo bottles: SLS. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and SLES Sodium Laureth Sulfate are two very popular sulfates present in many shampoo brands. SLES is touted to be less irritating that SLS. They are, howver, effective cleansers. The FDA requires that a maximum percentage of sulfate in a shampoo is at ONE PERCENT or LESS. And, cosmetic chemists tell us that to reduce possible irritation, that a sulfate-containing shampoo be applied to wet hair, lathered and rinsed-away immediately.
Choose products that you and your clients enjoy! Follow every advance you can with respect to product improvements and ingredeints. The world, hopefully, will continue to be a "greener" place.. and it is up to us to decide how we can participate!
